CEIBS Partners with Ivey Business School to Build Global Platform of Chinese Cases
October 13, 2020. Shanghai – CEIBS and Ivey Business School today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to include Ivey Publishing's China-relevant cases in Chinese in the Global Platform of China Cases (ChinaCases.Org), a case library initiated and operated by CEIBS and financially supported by the Shanghai government. This collaboration aims to promote and support case-method teaching in schools and institutions in Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, through enhanced site license services. The inclusion of Ivey's Chinese cases will deliver a strong boost to ChinaCases.Org in terms of quantity and quality. As the most influential China case library globally, the combined collection will soon reach more than 2,500 high-quality cases in total.
Ivey Business School at Western University is the second-largest producer of business cases and the largest developer of Asian cases globally. Ivey Business School and Harvard Business School are both pioneers of the case method in North America and have drawn worldwide recognition for this unique teaching approach. Ivey Publishing has shared the essentials of case teaching and case writing worldwide for decades. It houses more than 28,000 cases that conform to the highest standards for case teaching and are widely used by business schools around the world. In its collection, about 1,500 cases relevant to business management in Asia (including China) have Chinese translations.
Sharon Hodgson, Dean of Ivey Business School, said, “Both partners have much to offer. Ivey is happy to be developing this partnership with CEIBS.”
“It was the strong demand for China-relevant teaching cases in Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan that prompted us to collaborate on building this Chinese case library,” noted CEIBS Vice President and Dean Ding Yuan. “ChinaCases.Org has contributed Chinese knowledge to the global body of management expertise through its 1,000 China-themed cases. The inclusion of Ivey cases will further enrich and improve its collection. We hope to build a truly global platform of China-focused cases via this cooperation as a testament to CEIBS' commitment of 'China Depth and Global Breadth'.”
Teaching through the case method has always been high on the agenda since the CEIBS' inception. The CEIBS Case Center was founded in 2001 to produce high-quality China-focused teaching cases. It develops about 100 cases every year, and the use of in-house developed cases in CEIBS class has grown annually. In 2019, for example, they made up 64% of the cases used in EMBA classes, CIEBS' largest program. Furthermore, CEIBS has undertaken the construction and operations of the Shanghai MBA Case Development and Sharing Platform and ChinaCases.Org, through which more than 2,400 teachers from 23 universities in Chinese mainland have enjoyed access with about 300,000 case copies used.
“Ivey Publishing and ChinaCases.Org have stringent evaluation systems for case selection, which means accepted cases conform to the highest standards in the world. Through this partnership, we will be able to build a strong teaching case library that stays relevant in the business world,” said Professor Chen Shimin, Director of the CEIBS Case Center.
Paul Beamish, Professor of International Business & General Management at Ivey Business School, said, “As a scholar in international business, advocate of case method teaching and longtime visitor to China, over the past 35 years I have observed a steady improvement in the quality of case teaching and development in China. The standard of management education will surely further increase from this partnership.”
The two partners plan to develop more than 200 China-relevant cases every year to meet the case teaching needs of business schools, thus contributing to the development of management education in China and the Asia Pacific region.
